Fall 2011

I had the opportunity to spend time at Brush Creek Ranch for their pilot Artist Residency Program in Saratoga, Wyoming.  During my stay there I chose to create work with the materials of the land and on the land to show the landscape in a new way to capture the viewers attention.  I worked outside most days rearranging & collecting the landscape.

The first part of my residency a colleague of mine - Gail Fraser, joined me and assisted me in creating ‘Time Line’ and part of ‘Circle Squared’ for my vision of  ‘Dialogue on Brush Creek’.  We came across areas of pink & black granite  mixed together along the river bank,(see ‘Before’ picture), and after moving a good TON  (possibly 2 ), of rocks, created this dialogue.  And, ...  Of course with the flowing  river & abundance of creek rocks we just HAD to build some cairns!!!

Gail hand dyed feathers and brought them to the ranch and I collaborated with her to create her vision of incorporating them into a piece for Brush Creek Ranch.    We wanted to acknowledge the some of the original inhabitants to this area. [Indian warriors earned a feather each time he did something the tribe felt was a brave act. Each time the warrior earned a feather, he would either wear it or put it on a pole used for special occasions. Once he had collected enough feathers, they were then made into a headdress.]  We searched the ranch for the right branch to incorporate the feathers.   The branch came alive with the feathers and autumn’s colors and looks as though it is creeping into the horses corral to explore.  The title of this piece then became “Autumn’s Head-dress”.

I brought home a supply of other branches and continue to create new sculptures.  I also have a special choreographed dancing trees installation and would love to share my vision with you!
